Kenya’s president has postponed next week’s planned reopening of schools until further notice, as heavy rains and floods that have killed more than 200 people continue

More than 90 percent of schools in Kenya reopened on Monday after flooding killed over 270 people and delayed the resumption of classes by two weeks, the government said. The reopening of schools was scheduled for April 29 after a three-week holiday and had been postponed twice due to damage to roads and some schools.

A secondary school in Keighley has been closed to almost all students due to flooding. Heavy rain overnight flooded several areas of Holy Family Catholic School, in Spring Gardens Lane. On Monday, the school said it was closed to all students except those sitting GCSE exams in English and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

The death toll from devastating floods and landslides in Kenya, triggered by heavy rains, has risen to 277, according to a government announcement. The update came as schools across the nation cautiously resumed classes for the second term,
